What is a bareboat charter?

It is the rental of a boat without a hired captain. Charterers may proceed with the rental as long as they can provide the appropriate qualifications, that will ensure that they are qualified to navigate and handle the boat.
To charter a sailing yacht in Greece it is necessary for at least one crew member (skipper) to have sailing certificates. The minimum requirement is for at least one member to have a valid certificate/license. Sufficient certificates are : ICC certificates for bareboat skipper or superior, ASA 104 or superior, RYA bareboat skipper certificates at the indicated level or other local certificates similar to the above.
Apart from skippers, co-skippers need to have little sailing experience, which can be declared on a simple declaration form signed on the spot at the time of embarkation.

Charterers with no or little experience in sailing can rent a charter with a skipper. Sailing Stars works with professional skippers who have a lot of experience in handling the yacht for you. Your captain will be responsible for the navigation, mooring and the safety of the vessel and the passengers onboard. He will also be responsible for setting a course or making alterations due to weather conditions where necessary.

Damage deposit – Refundable Security Deposit
Fuel – The yacht should be delivered topped up with fuel.
Port or Marina fees – This is a daily-based fee, which applies to almost all ports in Greece with varied costs. The port fees of the first and the last day of the charter are included in the yacht charter price.
Options – Any optional extras that you might request.

Who decides the sailing itinerary?

On a bareboat you can decide your itinerary. We are here to help you find the best itinerary based on your desires and always provide a chart briefing before you leave your home port.
In case you are chartering a yacht with skipper or crew then you can sit down with your captain and develop an itinerary based on your preferences – or you can leave it all up to our experienced skippers who love showing our guests the highlights of the Ionian islands that only the locals know! Your itinerary can be changed at any time if you wish to spend more or less time in any specific area.

What are the weather conditions like in Greece during spring / summer / autumn?

The climate in Greece is typical of the Mediterranean climate: mild and rainy winters, relatively hot and dry summers and generally, extended periods of sunshine throughout most of the year. A great variety of climate subtypes, always within the Mediterranean climate frame, are encountered in several regions of Greece. This is due to the influence of topography (great mountain chains along the central part and other mountainous bodies) on the air masses coming from the moisture sources of the central Mediterranean Sea.
During the warm and dry periods the weather is usually stable, the sky is clear, the sun is bright and there is generally no rainfall. There are, however, infrequent and brief intervals of rapid rain chiefly over mainland areas. The warm period starts in April and ends end of October with and average air temperature from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.
The warmest period occurs during June, July and August, when the mean maximum temperature lies between 29.0 and 35.0 degrees Celsius.

What should I bring with me?

Our yachts are fully equipped for charter. The boats carry the most up-to-date equipment and all the extras a sailor could ask for, including GPS satellite navigation systems, autopilots, a mainsail stacking system and CD players with cockpit speakers. The keynote is simplicity. Casual and breezy beach attire is certainly the order of the day on deck, though for evenings ashore, slacks or a sundress are appropriate. Rubber soled shoes as opposed to hard soles are recommended aboard our yachts, so wear boat shoes or tennis shoes. You may find aquatic shoes convenient for the beach. Above all, protection from the sun is vital – lots of suntan lotion, wide-brimmed hats or sailing caps, and loose-fitting cotton cover-ups. For cool or windy evenings, a windbreaker comes in handy. Step aboard and leave the dock without a further thought!
